Visual Inspection in Determining Laryngeal Involvements of Hypopharyngeal Cancer

Abstract
In twenty patients with hypopharyngeal cancer, the extent of laryngeal involvements was estimated preoperatively by means of visual inspections including indirect laryngoscopy, direct esophagoscopy, fiberscopy and strobofiberscopic video recordings.
All patients underwent total laryngopharyngectomy and surgical specimens were subjected to a whole organ section study.
The results were summerized as follows:
1. Diagnostic rate by inspection about laryngeal muscle invasion was over 80%, interarytenoid, cricothyroid, thyroarytenoid and lateral cricoarytenoid, and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles in order from high to low.
2. Paraglottic space involvement could be detected by inspection in all cases in false cord level but in true cord level, diagnostic rate was relatively low (75 %). Preepiglottic space invasion could be also detected near totally.
3. Involvement to aryepiglottic fold could be relatively easily detected by inspection.
